The previous owner of the home put landscape fabric underneath the shrub area. I do not know what kind of shrubs these are, how can I find out? Anyway I put fertilizer stakes in the ground for them this year and I always feed them with Liquafeed so will that help? My main concern is the 3 that always grow are 4 ft wide by 2 ft high. The 2 that do not grow at all are 2 feet wide by 1 foot high right now. What do I need to do to have these grow or should I just replace them with new shrubs all together?

My husband I just bought our first house in Ohio, and we’re in the process of completely removing everything from our front garden because it was really overgrown with weeds and ivy. That leaves us starting from scratch this spring, which is nice because it leaves us complete creativity, but difficult because we don’t know a dang thing about gardening. =) Can anyone suggest a simple variety of bushes and shrubs that look nice together and are relatively low-maintenance?

There is also newspaper and twigs and things like that in it. I keep it wet, turn it once every few days, and keep a sheet of plastic over it. My question is this, am I doing it right? I don’t have it in a container, just on the ground. What else can I put in it? What can I do to make it better?

I live in an apartment and my mom is going to let me grow vegetables in her yard as long as they are in pots. She doen’t want me to dig up her lawn, plus the lawn has been sprayed with chemicals for years so it is contaminated soil anyway. I figure plastic pots are not safe with the plastic chemicals leaching into the soil, so the best thing would be a terra cotta pot, right? Do they contain lead? I am wanting the most safe container I can find.
