Very easy to grow. Closely related to turnips but the flesh is yellow and is milder and sweeter. Plants are hardier, yields are greater and the growing period is longer. Keep and eye on weeds and water well in dry spells. Harvest as soon as the roots are large enough to use or leave them in the soil until spring and lift as needed. If storing (from December) twist off the leaves, place between layers of dry sand and keep in a dry shed.

End April to mid June n/a Need a firm, non-acid soil with good drainage. Pick a sunny spot and dig in autumn adding lime if needed and a fertiliser before planting. Sow thinly and thin out seedlings until they are 9ins apart. Keep 15ins between rows. Mid September to end March Keep unpeeled in a cool, dry place for up to 5 days Remove tops and roots. Peel until yellow flesh is reached. Cut into slices or cubes and boil for 30 mins. Drain and mash.
