A prickly, shrubby plant with attractive flowers followed by the shiny fruits. Usually purple but can also be white. Also known as Eggplant. Grows very well in a greenhouse but not as easily outdoors. Provide a sunny, sheltered spot with additional protection such as a cloche or cold frame. Mainly grown from seed which will keep for up to five years. Remove the growing point when 12ins high and stake. Mist plants to avoid red spider mite. When five fruits have formed remove lateral shoots and remaining flowers. Water regularly and feed with tomato food.

Outdoors: March - Indoors: late February

Outdoors under protection: late May - Indoors: April to mid May

Well-drained fertile soil in sunny, sheltered spot. In the greenhouse use compost or grow-bags.

24 inches apart and 24 inches between rows

Mid July to mid October

Will keep in a food bag in the fridge for up to two weeks

Thinly slice and sprinkle with salt to absorb the bitter juices and soften the flesh. Leave for 20mins and rinse. Dry with kitchen roll. Lightly cover in flour and fry until golden-brown.
