Green roofs are
rooftop areas which are planted with vegetation to attract birds
and beneficial insects.
Sedum are the most
popular plants used but there are more adventurous options
available such as Pulsatilla vulgaris, Pasque flower Armeria,
Thrift Festuca glauca and Blue fescue Alpine saxifrages
They are quite easy
to install with the best and simplest option being to use
pre-planted, interlocking trays laid on top of a waterproof
membrane. The trays themselves are disguised as the plants grow.
Fill the frame with potting compost mixed with a good amount of
Perlite to keep the weight down.
It is likely to cost
about £25 to £40 per sq. metre plus waterproofing and labour.
You need to make sure the roof is strong enough to support the
weight of the structure, soil and plants.
Advertisment
If you ever need to repair the roof you simply
lift the trays.

roof visit the BBC's gardening site which shows Joe Swift

Crocus. Ice Plant Sedum Bertram
Anderson. This plant has won an Award of Garden Merit
from the RHS for its outstanding qualities. It is a low
growing variety, with purplish-grey leaves that emerge
in spring. In bold contrast with its cool coloured
foliage are the heads of rosy-red flowers which begin
their show in late summer and continue well into the
autumn. The flowers are loved by butterflies and bees.
Plant it in full sun, and it requires good drainage for
optimum growth. 1 litre pot £5.95 |
