Choose a sunny, sheltered site. Plant bare-rooted plants between July and September. Create a small mound in the planting hole, spread out the roots and place the crown level with surrounding soil. Container-grown plants can be planted at any time. Cover unprotected plants if frost is expected.

New plants can be raised from runners in June or July. Bury a small pot filled with compost. Secure a plantlet to the compost with a hairpin. Remove the runner beyond the plantlet. Water well. Once rooted remove the plantlet from the runner and plant on.

Prune when the last berries have been picked. Cut off the leaves about 3 inch about the crown and remove unwanted runners. Remove any mulch or weeds surrounding the plants.

Well-drained, slightly acid, light soil. A month before planting remove all weeds, add well-rotted manure or compost.

Apply a general fertiliser in March or April. After fruiting apply a high-potash feed. When the fruit begins to swell mulch around the plants and under the fruit with straw. Watch out for slugs

Keep new plants well watered. Water established plants during dry weather.

Pick fruits which are red all over. Do not pull the fruit away from the stem.

Eat as soon as possible but can be kept for a few days in a cool place.
