Choose a sheltered, sunny spot. Plant bare-rooted canes in November or December. Dig a trench about 12 to 18 inches wide and 3 inches deep. Spread out the roots. Replace the soil ensuring the old soil mark is level with the surface. Cut the stem back to a bud about 1 ft above soil level. Water well. Container-grown plants can be planted at any time. During October or November lift a sucker and cut away from the parent plant. Plant on. New plants: cut down old canes in spring when new growth appears. Established Summer varieties: after fruiting cut down all fruited canes and keep 6-9 un-fruited canes. Established Autumn varieties: cut down all canes to ground level in February.

A rich, slightly acid soil which is not too heavy. Avoid water-logging. A month before planting remove all weeds, add well-rotted manure or compost.

Apply a general fertiliser in March and then mulch.

Water regularly during the first season and keep the soil moist while the fruit is swelling.

Pick when fully coloured but firm. Leave the stalk and plug behind.

Eat or freeze as soon as possible.
