A vigorous plant so best grown in a pot and bought indoors for winter. Site on a South or South-West facing wall. Plant between November and March and re-pot every 2-3 years.

Buy a 2 or 3 year old partly trained tree. For a bush prune as you would an apple tree. Fan trained trees should be bought at 2/3 years old with 8 or more branches. Tie each branch to a cane and tie the canes to horizontal wires at 45 degrees to form a fan shape. In February cut about a third off each branch just above a bud. All established trees should be pruned in June. Young shoots should be pinched back to five leaves. Thin fruits in late September. Retain the fruits closest to the end of the shoots, these will be next years fruits. Remove larger undeveloped fruits.

Any soil as long as its free draining.

Do not overfeed. Apply a light dressing in spring and add a mulch. Apply high-potash liquid fertiliser as the fruit swells.

Water regularly in dry weather, irregular watering can cause fruit to split.

Leave on the tree until the stalk weakens and the dark fruit hangs down.

Store in a cool place for several weeks. Can be dried.
