Will grow in any sheltered situation. Plant bare-rooted canes in November. Dig a hole wide enough for the roots to spread out. Replace the soil ensuring the old soil mark is 2 inches below the surface. Cut back stems to a bud 1-2 inches above the surface. Container-grown plants can be planted at any time. In October take 10 inch cuttings from this years wood. Make a sloping cut at the top and straight cut at the bottom. Cut v-shaped trench and add sand to the bottom. Insert 6 inches apart with 2 buds showing above the surface. Replace the soil. Plant on the following October. Prune November to March beginning 2 years after planting cutting out old, weak branches. From 3 or 4 years cut out weak or diseased branches and cut out about a third of the fruited branches to make room for new growth. Cut out all wood more than 4 years old.

Organic rich soil. A month before planting remove all weeds, add well-rotted manure or compost.

Apply a general fertiliser in March and then mulch. Apply a potassium-rich liquid feed in summer when fruits are swelling.

Water regularly during the first season and keep the soil moist while the fruit is swelling.

Pick 7 days after fruit has turned blue-black.

Can be kept in the fridge for a week or frozen.
